This position is local position and open to indigenous and/or legal residents of Nigeria. We are seeking for suitably qualified candidate to fill the following positions below:

Job Title: Research and Cataloging Lead
Location:
Yola
Department: Digital Services

Summary of Position

  • The Research and Cataloging Lead shall be saddled with the responsibility of providing the needed publications/research materials to faculty and students to aid their research process.
  • He/shall also group and organize research publications in a professional and orderly manner.
  • As the custodian of the research publications, it is his duty to ensuring that confidentiality prevails in the way and manner research work is disclosed to the public.
  • The position shall provide leadership to the entire research/catalogue team and report back directly to the Director-Digital Services.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the research / project and cataloging team to set and implement a vision for effective research and current cataloging practices that will enhance research among Faculty and students.
  • Serves as Digital Services liaison to academic departments and liaise with faculty members for research and project needs of faculty and students.
  • Promotes and coordinates the establishment of Institutional Repository and archives for the AUN. In consultation with the Director also makes Consortia arrangements with Institutions within and outside the Country.
  • In collaboration with the Director, provides a short and long range plan for the enhancement of study and research in the Institution
  • Identifies pulls and organizes relevant Open Access e-books in various disciplines for students, faculty, and staff as well assist towards the adaption of free peer-reviewed electronic textbooks for students.
  • Promotes the use of Open Access and Open Educational resources among members of the University community and for Outreach programs through provision of “library in a flash”
  • Provides individualized or group research assistance to students faculty and visitors; and on-the job training for new members of the unit.
  • Constantly browses through designated databases to ensure their functionality and report to the Director defects noticed.
  • Compiles bibliographies, simple indexes, pathfinders or guides and other devices that will aid in locating items from print and electronic resources.
  • Assists patrons to acquire the skills that will enable them use mobile technologies: iPad, Kindle, smart-phones, wireless printers etc.
  • Maintains and analyzes the statistics of the activities of his unit.
  • Participates in Information Literacy classes, outreach programs and work shifts, when the need arises.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science, Information Science.
  • A Master’s degree would be preferred
  • Minimum of three to five years of professional experience in a digitalized learning resource center or library facility required.
  • Ability to articulate a vision for reference services.
  • One year of supervisory or management experience preferred.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills.
  • Must be flexible enough to adapt to changing circumstances at workplace.
  • Must demonstrate a good knowledge of information communication technology in reaching out to faculty and students.
  • Must also demonstrate team building skills including the ability to motivate, develop and mentor others.

Job Title: Economics/Civic Education Teacher
Location:

Department: Charter School

Summary of Position

  • The Economics/Civic Education Teacher will work towards the achievement of the purpose and aims of the charter school through the delivery of effective teaching, leading to high quality learning for students in Economics and Civic Education.
  • Also, he/she will be charged with the responsibility of creating a classroom environment that develops in each student an awareness of his/her civic roles and responsibilities in accordance with the mission and vision of the school.

Detailed Listing of Responsibilities

  • To assist in the development of appropriate syllabuses, resources, schemes of work, making policies and teaching strategies in the subject area of civic education
  • To contribute to the implementation and improvement of a plan in the subject area
  • To plan and prepare courses and lessons and ensure a high quality of learning experience for the students on being a responsible citizen of their countries.
  • To make students aware of their rights and duties to constituted authorities.
  • To communicate, as appropriate, with the parents of students and with persons or bodies outside the school concerned with the welfare of individual students after consultation with the Executive Director AUN Schools.
  • To assess, record and report on the attendance, progress, development and attainment of students and to keep such records as are required
  • To use a variety of delivery methods that will stimulate learning appropriate to students’ needs and the demands of the relevant syllabus
  • To maintain discipline in accordance with the school’s procedures and to encourage good practice with regard to punctuality, behavior, and standards of work.
  • To ensure that the classroom provides a positive learning environment including the use of stimulating displays
  • To take part in the staff development program
  • To continue personal development in relevant areas including subject knowledge and teaching methods
  • To review from time to time methods of teaching and programs of work
  • To maintain appropriate records and to provide relevant accurate and up to date information in the tracking of students and their performance
  • To communicate effectively with the parents of students as appropriate
  • To cooperate with other staff to ensure a sharing and effective use of resources to the benefit of the school and the students.
  • To actively promote schools’ policies and continue personal development as agreed
  • To undertake any other duties as specified by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • A B.Ed from a recognized tertiary institution in a relevant field
  • A Post-Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) would be a plus.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years teaching experience.
  • Possess high level interpersonal communication skills.
  • Use of instructional technology for teaching and learning.

Job Title: Professor of History
Location:
Yola
Department: School of Arts & Sciences

Summary of Position

  • The Assistant Professor of History will be responsible for teaching, research and community service as may be requested by the Dean.
  • S/he will be able to teach Nigerian Peoples and Cultures and African history.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to also contribute to teaching other courses related broadly to History such as Western Civilization, Asian and Middle Eastern Civilization, History & Philosophy of Science.
  • The successful candidate will engage in historical research on the peoples and cultures of Nigeria – from pre-colonial to pre-independence era.
  • S/he will work closely with the Dean of the school in formulating and implementing course structure that will translate to effective teaching and learning of Nigerian history and civilizations in general in line with the development philosophy of the American University of Nigeria

General Responsibilities

  • Teaching: The primary responsibility of a faculty member is teaching and supporting students through problem-centred learning.
  • Research: Faculty members are expected to undertake research in relevant areas of expertise and in line with university mission.
  • Community Service: Faculty are to contribute to AUN community service and development activities
  • Class Attendance: Faculty members should make clear that students are expected to attend class and complete required assignments.
  • Academic Advising: Faculty members must be available to assist students throughout the semester and maintain stipulated student office hours.
  • Department/Schools Meetings: Attending meetings on a regular basis and as necessary to facilitate communication and to accomplish the work required for the smooth operation of the department and school.
  • Attendance at Academic Functions: Full-time faculty members are expected to attend meetings of the faculty and any all-college meetings called by AUN administration.

Requirements for the Position

  • Must have a PhD in History from a reputable University
  • Must have a minimum of three years of post-secondary teaching & research experience garnered at a reputable University
  • Must have a promising scholarship and present verifiable evidence of academic publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals
  • Must have expertise in African history, particularly history of Nigerian peoples and cultures; and/or history of western civilization and culture from  the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment
  • Experience in Africa or other parts of the developing world is a must.
  • Must be proficient in use of ICT tools and e-resources for teaching and research
