The University of Benin was founded in 1970. It started as an Institute of Technology and was accorded the status of a full-fledged University by National Universities Commission (NUC) on 1st July, 1971. In his Budget Speech in April 1972, the then Military Governor of Mid-Western State, Col. S. O. Ogbemudia (then also Visitor to the University) formally announced the change of the name of the Institute of Technology to the University of Benin. On 1st April, 1975 the University at the request of the State Government, was taken over by the Federal Government and became a Federal Government and became a Federal University. Today, the University has continued to grow from strength to strength with a number of Faculties, Departments, Institutes and Units.Following NUC’s directives, the University experimented with the Collegiate System in 1991/92 and 1992/93.

1.) Director of Physical Planning

Job Description:

  • The Director of Physical Planning is a management position in the University and responsible to the vice-chancellor for the day to day administration and management. of the Physical Planning Division.


2.) Director of Audit

Job Description:

  • The Director of Audit is a Management position in the University and responsible to the Vice chancellor for the day to day administration and management of the Audit Department of the University of Benin, Benin City.


3.) Director of Health Services

Job Description:

  • The Director of Health Services is a management position in the University and responsible to the vice-Chancellor for the day to day administration and management of the Health services Department in the University.

The Person:

  • Applicants for the post of Directors must have in the past exhibited considerable degree of competence, responsiveness, demonstrable integrity and efficiency in management.
  • Applicant must be in good health and must be able to bear the rigors of the duties of a Director.
  • Also the candidate must be found to possess the following qualities: Vision, proven academic distinction managerial ability, integrity and transparency in private and public life.
  • In addition, the candidate should have the ability to develop linkages with external committees to support emerging needs of the University, command respect and arouse cooperation and loyalty of staff and students of the University.


4.) Deputy Director of Works

Job Description:

  • The Deputy Director of Works is a management position in the University and responsible to the Director of Works for the day to day administration and management of the Works facilities in the University.


5.) Deputy Bursar

Job Description:

  • The Deputy Bursar is an Officer of the University and responsible to the Bursar for the day to day administration and control of the Financial affairs of the University.


6.) Deputy Director of Physical Planning

Job Description:

  • The Deputy Director of Physical Planning is a management position in the University and responsible to the Director of Physical Planning for the day today administration and management of the Physical Planning facilities in the University.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Director of Physical Planning: A good honours degree in Engineering, Architecture or Quantity Surveying as well as a professional qualification e.g. COREN (and relevant professional qualification for others). Possession of a higher degree will be an advantage. PLUS: Fifteen years (15) post-qualification cognate experience at least five (5) of which must have been as a Deputy Director/Managerial positions inthe University setting or similar institute.
  • Director of Audit: A good honours degree in Accounting as well as professionally recognized Accounting qualification e.g. ICAN,CNA, ACCA, ACA, ICMA. Possession of a higher degree will be an advantage with 15 years post qualification/Cognate experience.
  • Director of Health Services: A good honours degree in Medicine as well as professionally recognized qualification, e.g. FMCPH, FWACP, FWACS and FMCOG. Possession of a higher degree will be an advantage. Plus fifteen (15)years post qualification/cognate experience.
  • Deputy Director of Works: A good honours degree in Engineering as well as professionally registered qualification e.g. COREN but with twelve (12) years post qualification.
  • Deputy Bursar: As it is in the case of Director of Audit with at least (12) twelve years of experience must have been in managerial positions including Chief Accountant in a University or similar institution.
  • Deputy Director of Physical Planning: As it is in the case of Director of Physical Planning with at least (12) twelve years of experience.


Conditions of Service

For the post of Directors the successful candidate shall hold office for a single term of eight (8) years only on such terms and conditions applicable to Federal Universities in Nigeria and as may be determined by the appropriate University laws and Governing Council.

For the post of Deputy Director and Deputy Bursar, the successful candidate shall hold office on such terms and conditions applicable to Federal Universities in Nigeria and as may be determined by the appropriate University laws and the Governing Council.
