The American University of Nigeria (AUN), in partnership with The American University, Washington, D.C., seeks qualified candidates for the position of Dean of The School of Information Technology and Communications.

The American University of Nigeria is a private university in northeast Nigeria, based in Yola, the capital of Adamawa State. Envisioned in 2003 as a model for African higher education, AUN enrolled its first class of 200 students in the Fall of 2005. AUN remains the only private, American-style institution of higher education in Western Africa. Today, AUN enrolls 1,500 students and is led by a team of 93 faculty. AUN prides itself on providing its students the knowledge and tools necessary to achieve both personal success and to contribute to sustainable development of their nation, the continent and the world.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The American University of Nigeria School of Information Technology and Communications builds on and contributes to the strengths of the University, as a whole. The School has a reputation for excellence in the preparation of its students, for close student-faculty interaction and collaboration and for preparing its students to make a difference in the world. The School offers B.S. Programs in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems and Communications. Each of these Areas offer further Concentrations that students may choose, depending on their interest. The School serves the needs of students throughout sub-Saharan Africa, by offering Programs that prepare students to be applied and practical, critical thinkers, problem solvers and effective communicators. As a part of this mission, the faculty members engage in applied, integrative and pedagogical scholarship. The School encourages Faculty to engage in research that furthers the objectives of the School and the University.

The Dean works closely with the Senior Academic Administration in building a collaborative relationship within the local community, as well as the broader nation of Nigeria, the region and the world.

Review of candidates will begin in the Fall of 2010 and will continue until the position is filled.

In addition to other priorities, the University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching and/or service.

Applicants with extensive international experience are particularly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will meet the following criteria:

•     A thorough understanding of the challenges and significance of building a preeminent School of Information Technology and Communications in a developing country;
•     A desire to build innovative Graduate and Undergraduate Programs using technology-enhanced education;
•     Knowledge of cloud and web-based Information Technology tools;
•     Experience at least at the Department Chair level or equivalent management position(s);
•     An ability to interact effectively with both the University community and the broader community;
•     A commitment to academic integrity, demonstrated by past actions;
•     Initiative, energy, flexibility and creativity; and,
•     A history of working collaboratively with others and a commitment to team development and complex project implementation.

Candidates with experience in Africa or other parts of the developing world are desired.

The successful candidate will have a Terminal Degree (Ph.D.), preferably from a U.S. institution of higher education, in an appropriate academic discipline; at least five to seven years of experience in comparable positions; management abilities; and, effective organizational and communication skills.
