We are recruiting to fill the vacant position below:

Job Title: Consultant – Training of Frontline Health Workers in Secondary Health Facilities on Essential New Born Care in Lagos State

Background
In an effort towards reducing neonatal and U5 child mortality, Save the Children through the Health workers Capacity building project had in the last 2 years trained 65 frontline health workers on Essential Newborn care

The trained health workers were selected from different PHCs and private health facilities across the state and they have since been providing quality newborn care services. While all the previous trainings were only targeted at health workers at the primary health care level, those at the secondary health care levels were always presumed to have all the skills needed for newborn care. However, this had not always been the case, as many mortalities have also been recorded at the secondary level of care, hence the need for ENC trainings at this level as well.

Therefore, this Terms of Reference (TOR) describes the approaches needed to train 54 health workers on ENC using the national approved blended ENCC package guidelines comprising of Helping Babies Breathe, Essential Newborn Care for Every baby and Essential Newborn Care for Small babies. The aim of the training is to improve the skills of frontline health workers (Nurses/Midwives and doctors) from target health facilities on Essential new born care.

Main Objectives

  • After the training, to ensure trainees practice ENCC efficiently and effectively
  • During the training, to improve the clinical and interpersonal skills of trainees when practicing ENCC
  • During the training, to up-date trainees with evidence based knowledge and skills in care of the newborn baby by using the revised blended ENCC package.

Methodology

  • The training will span for 4 days and will be for two batches of 25 participants each.
  • The participants for the training would be selected from the secondary health facilities based on the outcome of a Training Needs Assessment (TNA) of the health workers
  • Participants would be trained on the modules in the blended ENCC package.
  • There will be demonstration/Practice of skills using demonstration materials such as neonatalie and other related mannequins.
  • The training will involve adult learning techniques such as role plays, discussions, reading, audio visuals, and lecture presentations by participants, demonstrations, case study practices and clinical practice.

Activities
The lead facilitator will lead 4 resource persons. The following below will be taught during the training:

  • Strategies in taking care of the Newborn at the time of birth.
  • Skills needed in the examination of the newborn
  • Routine Care of the Newborn
  • The Baby with special needs

Other Activities:

  • Conduct role plays and making use of mannequins to provide innovative training.
  • Apply interactive sessions integrated into the training to provide opportunities of sharing experiences and ideas during the training.
  • Each participant will be evaluated based on performance at Pre-test versus post-test as well as facilitators’ subjective reports of the candidate.

Expected Outputs

  • All trainees have been made to understand all the rudiments associated with Essential New born care
  • All trainees have developed skills and competence in the conduct essential new born care
  • All trainees have developed good communication and interpersonal skills needed in patient care.
  • A comprehensive report on the training of Health Workers on Essential new born care
  • A post training plan for the trained health workers embedded in the report.

Qualifications

  • Consultant must be a Master Trainer on Essential Newborn Care course, preferably a Consultant Pediatrician
  • He/She must have over 5 years experience as a Master Trainer and over 7 years as a pediatrician.
