The government is to recruit 280,000 police officers, Minister of Police\u00a0 Affairs, Capt. Caleb Olubolade (retd.), has said.\u00a0Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, Olubolade, who put the number of the country\u2019s\u00a0 serving police officers at 370,000, said there were plans to increase it to\u00a0 650,000.<\/p>\n
He said while 90 per cent of the policemen would be trained in modern\u00a0 policing tactics and weapons handling.<\/p>\n
According to the minister, the move is aimed at reforming the police and\u00a0 making it more responsive to meet the security challenges facing the\u00a0 country.<\/p>\n
He said modern digital trunking communication network and equipment for\u00a0 tracking kidnappers and other criminals had been acquired for the police.<\/p>\n
Olubolade said about 1110 policemen had been trained in counter-terrorism and\u00a0 rapid response programme, basic intelligence course, patrol duties and operation\u00a0 course.<\/p>\n
Others are traffic management course, train-the-trainer, intelligence lead\u00a0 surveillance course curriculum development and effective leadership\u00a0 in public\u00a0 protection, intervention, mobilisation and sensitisation training.<\/p>\n
According to him, the government has provided about nine Bell helicopters for\u00a0 the police as well as some quantity of arms and ammunitions including various\u00a0 types of Amoured Personnel carriers and body protection armour (Bullet proof\u00a0 vests).<\/p>\n
The minister stated that the police received fund from the Education Trust\u00a0 Fund for implementation of various projects at the Police Academy, Kano to the\u00a0 tune of N580m.<\/p>\n
Olubolade stated that in 2011, the police recorded 879 robbery cases\u00a0 and 366\u00a0 kidnappings while 1,609 suspects were arrested and 766 firearms and 31, 175\u00a0 ammunition recovered from the suspects.<\/p>\n
He said, “Boko Haram insurgence is predominant in the northern states of the\u00a0 country; 118 Boko Haram attacks were reported in Bauchi, Borno, Kaduna, Niger,\u00a0 Yobe , Plateau States and the FCT where 308 victims lost their lives and 33\u00a0 suspects arrested.”<\/p>\n
