In the early nineties Edward Boateng, then Regional Director of Turner Broadcasting (CNN&#8217;s parent company), was travelling around the African continent on business. During his travels he became concerned about the lack of respect journalists received and he decided to try and help them gain recognition for their hard work and commitment.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000033;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000033;\" \/><strong style=\"color: #000033;\">African Journalist Awards 2014<\/strong><br style=\"color: #000033;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000033;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000033;\">The CNN MultiChoice African Journalist Competition is the most prestigious and respected Award for journalists across the African Continent. Its objective is to reinforce the importance of the role of journalists in Africa&#8217;s development and to reward, recognise and encourage journalistic talent across all media disciplines.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000033;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000033;\" \/><strong style=\"color: #000033;\">Who Can Enter?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #000033;\">\n<li>The Competition is open to African professional journalists, whether directly employed or freelancers, working in the continent of Africa who have produced a story which has been made available as a printed publication or broadcast through an electronic medium (television; radio or digital platform) whose primary audience are based in Africa.<\/li>\n<li>Please\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000099;\" href=\"http:\/\/z.cdn.turner.com\/cnn\/WORLD\/africa\/africanawards\/pdf\/2014\/Online-rules-of-entry-2014-English.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Click here<\/a>\u00a0(PDF)\u00a0to read the rules of the competition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong style=\"color: #000033;\">What the Judges are looking for<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000033;\">:<\/span><br style=\"color: #000033;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000033;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000033;\">Our panel of independent, highly respected and experienced judges are in pursuit of excellence. They will be looking for entries which:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #000033;\">\n<li>Tell the story in a balanced, comprehensive and objective manner.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate journalistic integrity and resourcefulness.<\/li>\n<li>Communicate the story in a way that makes the topic accessible and relevant to their audience.<\/li>\n<li>Display well organised research and insight.<\/li>\n<li>Was broadcast or published, in English, French or Portuguese, between January and December 2013 with proof supplied.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong style=\"color: #000033;\">The Prizes<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #000033;\">\n<li>The journalists selected by our panel of judges will enjoy an all-expenses paid finalists&#8217; programme of networking activities and workshops, culminating in the Gala Awards Ceremony. Each finalist will receive a cash prize, with each category winner also receiving a laptop computer and printer.<\/li>\n<li>The CNN MultiChoice African Journalist 2014 Award winner will be selected from the category winners and will receive an additional cash prize and will have the opportunity to participate in the CNN Journalism Fellowship at CNN Headquarters in Atlanta.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong style=\"color: #000033;\">Application Closing Date<\/strong><br style=\"color: #000033;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000033;\">30th May, 2014.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000033;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000033;\" \/><strong style=\"color: #000033;\">How to Enter<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #000033;\">\n<li>English, French and Portuguese entries are to be submitted using the online entry form (<a style=\"color: #000099;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnnmcaja.cnn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">www.cnnmcaja.cnn.com\/<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>You can only enter a maximum of 2 stories across all categories. Please carefully review your work of 2013 and enter your best story\/stories in the most suitable category.
