{"id":45539,"date":"2017-11-30T15:08:24","date_gmt":"2017-11-30T14:08:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/joblistnigeria.com\/?p=45539"},"modified":"2017-11-30T15:31:03","modified_gmt":"2017-11-30T14:31:03","slug":"united-states-institute-peace-new-recruitment-2-positions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/joblistnigeria.com\/united-states-institute-peace-new-recruitment-2-positions.html","title":{"rendered":"United States Institute of Peace New Recruitment [2 Positions]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) prevents, mitigates and resolves violent conflicts around the world by engaging directly in conflict zones and providing analysis, education and resources to those working for peace.<\/p>\n<p>We are recruiting to fill the positions\u00a0below<\/p>\n<p><strong>Job Title:\u00a0Community Engagement Officer<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Location:<\/strong> Nigeria<strong><br \/>\nSummary<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The community engagement officer will lead USIP\u2019s efforts to create a Nigerian network of community facilitators.<\/li>\n<li>The officer will identify a group of civic leaders, including youth, women and religious, and will support them through skills training to prepare, convene and facilitate intergroup dialogues aimed at resolving local conflicts and supporting USIP\u2019s ongoing efforts in Nigeria.<\/li>\n<li>This position reports to the Senior Program Officer for Nigeria (in Washington, D.C).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Job Responsibilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Work with the DC-based Senior Program Officer and in-country team to design, manage, and implement activities in support of USIP\u2019s Nigeria program;<\/li>\n<li>Identify and screen civic leaders to join the network of community facilitators;<\/li>\n<li>In coordination with USIP staff, conduct a needs assessment for skills, knowledge and practice among the selected community faciltiators;<\/li>\n<li>In coordination with USIP staff, oversee the facilitation of a series of trainings on negotiation, participation, dialogue, and communication for the facilitators;<\/li>\n<li>Manage the process of administering and monitoring small-grants to the facilitators to implement select intergroup dialogue activities;<\/li>\n<li>Provide oversight in the development, planning, implementation and monitoring of the activities of the facilitators network;<\/li>\n<li>Build strong working relationships with citizen groups, community-based groups, and civil society organizations for increased coordination, collaboration and knowledge sharing;<\/li>\n<li>Support research and drafting of publications (reports, briefing papers, etc.) and materials about the activities of the network of facilitators;<\/li>\n<li>Represent USIP with NGO networks and government stakeholders and promote effective collaborations and partnerships;<\/li>\n<li>Travel regularly (with USIP staff and alone) across Nigeria; including to parts of the country that may be considered insecure; to monitor the activities of facilitators and mobilize support for USIP\u2019s work;<\/li>\n<li>Build strong relations with local officials, community-based and civil society organizations and like-minded INGOs;<\/li>\n<li>Conduct assessments and convene local roundtable discussions on the activities of the network of community facilitators to inform policy and practice; and<\/li>\n<li>Perform other duties as required to further USIP\u2019s mission and goals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Qualities Sought:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Well organized, self-motivated, and able to conceptualize, manage, and implement projects in stressful environments;<\/li>\n<li>Effective in training, coaching\/accompaniment, participatory facilitation, community organizing, and leadership development;<\/li>\n<li>Deep knowledge of Nigeria including conflict, security, and political issues;<\/li>\n<li>In-depth understanding of the local conflicts and the drivers of conflict in the country;<\/li>\n<li>Poise, flexibility, discretion, and mature judgment to handle and respond appropriately and professionally in a fast-paced, high-pressure atmosphere;<\/li>\n<li>Outstanding written and verbal communications skills;<\/li>\n<li>Proven ability to think analytically and plan strategically, including setting objectives and identifying and capitalizing on opportunities for USIP\u2019s work;<\/li>\n<li>Ability to network extensively and build partnerships with community leaders and civil society organizations; and<\/li>\n<li>Ability to maintain performance expectations in diverse cultural contexts, and respect and relate appropriately to people of different faiths and cultural backgrounds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Qualifications<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A Degree in political science, conflict resolution, international affairs, or related area of study.<\/li>\n<li>Minimum 5-7 years relevant full-time staff level work experience required, including experience in community engagement, training, field research, and project management.<\/li>\n<li>Minimum 5-7 years relevant experience in facilitation, mediation and negotiation at the community level.<\/li>\n<li>English language fluency mandatory. Advanced proficiency in other Nigerian languages also preferred.<\/li>\n<li>Extensive experience working and living in Nigeria;<\/li>\n<li>Passion for USIP\u2019s subject matter and willingness to take on the responsibilities and duties as a key member of our team; and<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated strong work ethic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Remuneration<\/strong><br \/>\nCompensation is \/>\n<strong>Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Senior Advisor will provide strategic advice to grow USIP\u2019s work in Nigeria and the broader Lake Chad Basin area.<\/li>\n<li>Will work with the DC-based Senior Program Officer who leads USIP\u2019s programming in Nigeria, to inform and develop medium-term strategy, advance program goals, and identify new opportunities.<\/li>\n<li>Will provide oversight to coordinate USIP staff in Nigeria implementing programs focused on promoting inclusion, community security, and preventing election violence.<\/li>\n<li>As needed, the Senior Advisor may be asked to travel within Nigeria or regionally.<\/li>\n<li>This position will be based in Abuja with an expected duration of 12 months at 2 days per week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Major Duties and Responsibilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Work with the DC-based Senior Program Officer, and in-country team to promote activities in support of USIP\u2019s Nigeria program;<\/li>\n<li>As needed, provide technical expertise to the design and implementation of USIP activities in Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin area;<\/li>\n<li>As needed, provide technical advice on request to the design of USIP program proposals or workplans.<\/li>\n<li>Strengthen existing USIP partnerships with state governors and senior civic leaders;<\/li>\n<li>Provide advice on building new or strengthening existing partnerships with government, security officials, civil society networks, and international non-government organizations;<\/li>\n<li>Promote strong working relationships with the Nigerian government and the Lake Chad Basin Commission and security forces (including Multinational Joint Task Force-MNJTF) to advance USIP\u2019s mission through strategic partnerships;<\/li>\n<li>Provide coordinated oversight of the in-country implementation of USIP\u2019s Nigeria program strategy by consulting with staff and partner organizations;<\/li>\n<li>As necessary or appropriate, represent USIP with NGO networks and government stakeholders and promote effective collaborations and partnerships;<\/li>\n<li>Perform other duties as required to further USIP\u2019s mission and goals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Qualifications<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Master\u2019s Degree in International Relations, Law, Political Science or related subject; Ph.D. preferred.<\/li>\n<li>Minimum 14 years relevant full-time consulting or staff-level experience required, including work in active and recently active conflict zones;<\/li>\n<li>Minimum 5 years managing international development, human rights, and\/or peacebuilding projects and teams.<\/li>\n<li>Deep Knowledge of Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin area particularly on issues related to the Boko Haram conflict; civilian security; and civil-military relations;<\/li>\n<li>In-depth understanding of local conflicts in Nigeria and opportunities to resolve them;<\/li>\n<li>Experience in Nigeria and\/or conflict-affected regions of the Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin implementing programs engaging a broad range of stakeholders;<\/li>\n<li>Interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity to effectively interact with all levels of staff, policy makers, local partners, US and foreign government personnel, members of donor organizations, and
