Fellows will contribute writing and research to one our three main issue areas at the Breakthrough Institute:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thebreakthrough.org\/programs\/energy-and-climate\">Energy<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thebreakthrough.org\/programs\/conservation-and-development\">Conservation<\/a>, or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thebreakthrough.org\/issues\/Food-and-Farming#environment\">Food &amp; Farming<\/a>. Fellowships are highly competitive \u2014 only 5-10 percent of applicants are generally accepted \u2014 and involve cutting-edge writing, research, and public policy analysis. See below for more information on how to apply.<\/p>\n<p>Breakthrough Generation 2018 fellowships will take place mid-June to mid-August 2018. The first two weeks will be dedicated to Breakthrough Bootcamp, an intellectual crash course in Breakthrough\u2019s history and research. If you have a scheduling conflict with these dates, please email us as soon as possible to discuss.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Benefits:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The fellowship runs for ten weeks between June and August and pays $600 per week.<\/li>\n<li>Fellows work 40 hours per week, and may be considered for full-time employment at the end of the fellowship. Breakthrough does not provide housing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Requirements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Final-year undergraduates, college graduates, and postgraduates are eligible to apply for the fellowship.<\/li>\n<li>Fellowships are open to applicants from any country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Application:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cover Letter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please indicate at the top of your cover letter which of the three research areas you wish to be considered for: Energy, Conservation, or Food &amp; Farming. An excellent cover letter will display a thorough understanding of Breakthrough\u2019s work and ideas, and discuss at least one of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thebreakthrough.org\/publications\">our publications<\/a>\u00a0and\/or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ecomodernism.org\/\">An Ecomodernist Manifesto<\/a>\u00a0or Michael Shellenberger and Ted Nordhaus\u2019s book\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Break-Through-Environmentalism-Politics-Possibility\/dp\/0618658254\/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1347044700&amp;sr=8-4&amp;keywords=break+through\">Break Through<\/a>. Please limit your cover letter to one page maximum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CV\/Resume<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please limit your resume or CV to two pages maximum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Three Writing Samples<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1) A 500-1000 word argumentative essay or op-ed (does not have to be published) on a subject of your choice that demonstrates an ability to make a focused argument in a clear, convincing, and accessible way. This writing sample is evaluated for evidence of critical thinking and general writing skills. For examples of opinion pieces written by Breakthrough staff, see\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thebreakthrough.org\/index.php\/voices\/michael-shellenberger-and-ted-nordhaus\/\/ap-the-secret-history-of-the-gas-revolution\/\">here<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thebreakthrough.org\/index.php\/programs\/energy-and-climate\/advancing-wind-power\">here<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thebreakthrough.org\/archive\/how_we_made_clean_energy_cheap\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>2) A research paper, preferably between 15-20 pages. This does not need to have been published, but should demonstrate an ability to research and analyze a subject in more depth. It is recommended, but not required, that the topic of the research paper be relevant to the program area you are applying to.<\/p>\n<p>3) An additional writing sample of your choosing \u2014 this can be an opinion piece, a research paper, a policy memo, or any other piece of writing that complements the first two samples.<\/p>\n<p><strong>References<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please submit a minimum of three professional references with contact information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Letters of Recommendation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Letters of recommendation are welcome but not required. Recommendations will only be accepted if the author of the letter, not the applicant, sends the letter directly to Breakthrough.
